Codex + invideo

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It runs in your terminal, in your editor and in the desktop app, reading files, running commands and working through long tasks. Paired with invideo, Codex turns a brief and your footage into a cut on an invideo timeline, checks its own frames and exports the video.

Quick start

  1. 1

    Install Codex

Install the Codex CLI, then run codex and choose Sign in with ChatGPT

    npm install -g @openai/codex
  2. 2

    Install the invideo CLI

Needs Node.js. To run it without installing, use npx invideo@latest

    npm install -g invideo
  3. 3

    Sign in to invideo

Opens your browser. Approve it with your invideo account

    invideo auth login
  4. 4

    Make a first cut

Start Codex in the folder with your footage and ask. It runs invideo commands, and each answer links to the edit in invideo Editor

Read https://github.com/invideoio/cli/blob/main/AGENTS.md, then use the invideo CLI to cut a 30-second teaser from the clips in this folder with a title card and music
  5. 5

    Or add the MCP server

Instead of the CLI, add invideo's MCP server. Codex opens your browser to sign in, and the tools load in a new session

codex mcp add invideo --url https://mcp.invideo.io/mcp

MCP configuration

Connect Codex to invideoAdd the remote MCP server with one command. Sign in with OAuth in your browser. No API key needed.

Example prompts

  • “Cut a 30-second teaser from the clips in this folder”

  • “Write a script from this README and make a 60-second explainer”

  • “Warm up the interview clips and match the B-cam's white balance to the A-cam”

  • “Duck the music under the voiceover and bring the mix to -14 LUFS”

  • “Add captions from subtitles.srt and keep them clear of the lower third”

  • “Generate three b-roll shots of a city at sunrise”

  • “Find stock footage for each line of the script”

  • “Check the timeline for gaps and grab a frame at every cut to confirm none go black”

  • “Rebuild this cut as a 9:16 vertical for Reels”

  • “Export the video and a Premiere Pro project”

Common workflows

  1. 1Connect and sign in

    • Run codex mcp add invideo --url https://mcp.invideo.io/mcp
    • Approve the invideo sign-in in your browser
    • Start a new codex session
    • Run /mcp to see invideo listed
  2. 2Brief to first cut

    • Give Codex a brief and point it at your footage. Approve the upload when it asks for network access
    • Codex creates a project in invideo and sends you the link
    • It builds the cut on the timeline while you watch
    • It grabs frames to check the cut before it calls it done
  3. 3Polish the cut

    • Ask Codex to color match the shots and mix the audio
    • It grades the clips and levels the music under the voice
    • Take over at any frame in the same editor
    • Ask Codex to restore an earlier checkpoint if a pass goes wrong
  4. 4Deliver

    • Ask Codex for a 9:16 vertical next to the widescreen cut
    • It duplicates the timeline at 1080x1920 and reframes each shot
    • It exports the videos, or a project for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve
    • Share an export page your team can watch and download from

Tips for success

  • Add invideo once: the Codex CLI, IDE extension and ChatGPT desktop app share one MCP config in ~/.codex/config.toml
  • Run /mcp in Codex to check invideo is connected before you start
  • Keep invideo Editor open to watch each edit land under Codex's cursor
  • Ask Codex to check frames before it exports

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the invideo CLI or the MCP server?

Either works, on the same invideo timeline. With the CLI, Codex runs invideo commands in your terminal, follows the rules in the CLI's AGENTS.md and saves exports and frames straight to disk. The MCP server gives Codex invideo's tools inside its session, with nothing to install.

How do I connect Codex to invideo?

Install the invideo CLI with npm install -g invideo and run invideo auth login. It opens your browser to sign in with your invideo account. Or add the MCP server with codex mcp add invideo --url https://mcp.invideo.io/mcp and invideo's tools load in the next Codex session. There is no API key either way.

Do I need an invideo account?

Yes. You sign in with an invideo account when Codex connects, and you can create one during sign-in.

Does it work in the Codex IDE extension?

Yes. The CLI, IDE extension and desktop app share the same MCP configuration, so invideo is there once you've added it.

Can I edit while Codex is working?

Yes. You and Codex work in the same editor. You see its cursor and each edit as it happens, and you can make your own edits at any time.

Troubleshooting

Issue:Codex can't find invideo's tools

Solution:The tools load in a new session. Quit Codex, start it again and run /mcp to check invideo is listed.

Issue:invideo is missing from the server list

Solution:Run codex mcp list. If invideo isn't there, add it again with codex mcp add invideo --url https://mcp.invideo.io/mcp.

Issue:The invideo sign-in didn't finish

Solution:Run codex mcp login invideo and sign in again with the invideo account that owns the project.
