1. Paste the video link or upload a video file to Giphy as shown above
2. Trim your video by using the sliders to adjust duration and start time. For more precision, use the boxes above the sliders to enter exact times.
3. Select ‘Continue to Decorate’
4. This will open up the GIF editor. You can add different elements like text, stickers, filters or your own drawing from the top row menu. You can also change text color and animate any text you add.
5. When you’re done editing select, ‘Continue to Upload’
6. If you’ve used clips from an online video, give credit by adding the video link in the ‘Add source url’ box. Add tags to your GIF to make it easy for others to discover and share. You can also choose to make your GIF public or private.
7. Once you’re done, select ‘Upload to Giphy’
8. Your GIF is now ready to share or embed on your site! You can also download GIF images by right-clicking and selecting ‘Save Image As.’
Part 2: How to make an animated GIF from an image
1. Upload your image file to Giphy. Once the file is uploaded, you’ll be prompted to adjust the image duration. You can also add more files to your GIF by clicking on the ‘Browse Files’ button.
After you’ve adjusted the duration of all your images, select ‘Continue to decorate.’
2. This will open the editor where you can add text, stickers and animations to your image. You can also insert images by clicking on the button below the preview pane.
3. Once you’ve added the images, text and animations you’d like, follow the same steps as you would when uploading a video.

3. Make a GIF
MakeaGIF is another tool you can use to make animated GIFs online. It also has a unique feature which allows you to create GIFs directly from your webcam!
In this section, we’ll show you how to make an animated GIF from a YouTube video, but you can also create GIFs from Facebook video links or upload pictures or videos from your computer.
Step 1: Go to makeaGIF. Select the ‘YouTube to GIF’ option. You can also upload a video or an image file instead.
Step 2: Paste the link into the box and click ‘Continue to Editing.’
Step 3: Edit your video. MakeaGIF allows you to add stickers, captions and adjust the start time and duration of your video. Another unique feature is the ability to adjust GIF speed - so you can speed up or slow down your GIF.
When you’re done editing, click on ‘Continue to Publishing’
Step 4: Give your GIF a title and add tags to make it discoverable. Then, click ‘Create your GIF.’

How to make an animated GIF from a video using GIFs.com
Step 1: Copy-paste your video url or drag and drop a video file onto the page
(You can create an account on GIFs.com if you like, but you don’t need to login to use this program)
Step 2: Edit your video. GIFs.com has extensive video editing features and effects. The ‘Instant Effects’ tab on the side panel menu, has some great filters you can use - especially when you don’t have too much time to edit your GIF.
Step 3: Once you’re done editing, select ‘Create GIF’ on the top right corner of the screen. Add title and tags then click ‘Next.’
Step 4: Download GIF. GIFs.com not only allows you to download GIF images but also allows you to share directly to social media platforms and has multiple link options.

Here’s how to make an animated GIF in GIMP. To get started, you’ll have to download GIMP on your computer, since this isn’t an online platform.
GIMP offers more advanced editing options and features similar to other photo editing software. If you know how to make an animated GIF in Photoshop, you’ll be able to use GIMP with ease.
Right now, we’ll show you how to make an animated GIF using a few basic features.
Step 1: Download GIMP on your computer.
Step 2: Add an image.
Click on ‘File’ and ‘Open as layers.’ Select the image you want to add and click ‘Open.’
You can select multiple images at once, or repeat this step until you’ve added all the images you’d like in your GIF.
Step 3: Order the images in the layers tab. Think of each layer as an animation frame, - the more layers you add the more frames in your animation. Place the images in the order you’d like them to appear in the animation. The GIF sequence will start with your bottom layer and run through each layer bottom to top.
We’re going to use 3 images for layers but feel free to add more when you make your own.
Step 4: Convert this to a GIF. From the main menu select ‘Filters > Animation > Optimise (for GIF)’
Step 5: Now save your GIF. Select File and click on ‘Export As.’ A dialog box will open up - select ‘GIF Image’ and click ‘Export.’
Another dialog box will open. Select ‘As Animation’, ‘Loop Forever’, set the desired delay value and to take effect click on “Use delay entered above for all frames”. Click Export as a final step.
Note: If your GIF is moving too fast, increase the delay time between frames to slow it down.
Your GIF is now ready!

1. Design GIFs for mobile
Most people view emails and social media posts on their phones, so designing for mobile viewers is critical. Make sure your animated GIFs are easily viewed on smaller screens or messaging windows by designing them vertically (9:16) as much as possible. Horizontal images will appear smaller on a phone’s portrait mode.
Keep text sizes large, use minimal text and make sure your paragraphs have spaces between them to make it easy to read on smaller phone screens. Before you publish, test your GIF or post on both mobile and desktop screens, to make sure it’s mobile-friendly.

2. Less is more: Don't use complicated animations or multiple GIFs
When making animated GIFs, it’s important not to overdo the animations or include too many GIFs in one email or post. Having multiple moving frames can be distracting or even annoying - especially when scrolling on smaller screens.
It’s not always necessary to add complicated animations to leave an impact on the subscriber’s mind. Keep things simple and bold so it works on any device. Fossil’s animated GIF email only animates the background - which draws attention to the watch and makes the design simple and appealing. Hollister, on the other hand, animates both the logo and the text immediately below it - which feels a lot more messy, especially with the red background. The animated logo distracts from the main message of the summer sale.
3. Use bright colours to make your GIFs stand out
For social media, where competition is really high, think about using bright colours or bold typography to make viewers pause at your posts as they scroll. Created from a series of images, bright happy GIFs like this one from YO! stand out from the usual feed. If your brand colours aren’t bright - think about adding one bold element (either text or GIF) to make your post stand out.
4. Make your loops smooth
Make sure your animated GIF files loop smoothly when designing an infinite loop. Check that the last frame of your animation isn’t the same as the first. Viewing the same frame twice causes a long pause at the end of the GIF breaking the continuity of the infinite loop. Make sure you delete any duplicate frames that cause your loop to pause or break the flow.
If the animation is short, limit your loops to no more than three times before stopping the animation completely. If you’re making animated GIFs for social media, you don’t have to worry about this since most platforms have built-in functions that only play GIFs while they’re in view and stop them immediately after.
5. Make them easy to load and view!
While this isn’t directly related to how to make an animated GIF more attractive, GIFs that don’t load properly are very off-putting and will make you lose out on viewers. Here’s a few key things to keep in mind before you upload your animated GIFs online.
- Resolution: this is the biggest determining factor to keeping your animated GIF file sizes low - stick to GIFs that are less than 500 px
- Colors: If your animated GIF maker lets you control the number of colors, choose wisely. The higher the number of colors the better your image will look - but this also increases your file size. If your GIF is a simple animation with a few primary colours, you can stick to the lower end. But if you’re using a movie clip, this might not work.
- Frame rate: Standard GIFs run between 15 and 24 frames per second, but anything less than 200 frames works well. Try to stick to fewer than a 100 frames to keep file sizes down.
