Veo 3.1 vs Omni Flash for AI video — what's the difference for scene extension?

Scene extension is a binary capability difference, not a quality gap: extension currently works only on clips generated in Veo 3.1 — Omni Flash-generated clips cannot be extended at all. Use Veo 3.1 when a scene must run past a single generation; use Omni Flash for editing (in-paint, swaps, in-frame text tracking) within fixed 4–10 second clips.

If your scene needs to run longer than one generation, generate it in Veo 3.1 from the start — extension is currently only available for clips generated in Veo 3.1, and there is no path to extend an Omni Flash clip after the fact. You cannot generate in Omni Flash for its texture quality and then extend later; the model choice locks your options at generation time.

That lock matters because Omni Flash's clip ceilings are hard. Generation lengths are limited to 4, 6, 8, and 10 seconds, and testing across 30+ outputs found lip sync with a single speaker degrades past 6–7 seconds — so any scene longer than one clip has to be continued with a fresh generation rather than an extension. Continuing a scene that way carries a known risk: camera angle prompting in Omni is hit-or-miss, and failed angle changes tend to distort scene geography rather than just the angle, which breaks continuity exactly where an extension would have preserved it.

What Omni Flash gives you instead is editing depth on the footage you already have: in-paint and cleanup to insert or remove objects, a swap feature that replaces backgrounds, environments, or clothing while preserving the subject's roto and edges, and in-frame text tracking that keyframes overlays to a moving subject. The practical decision rule: Veo 3.1 for scenes that must extend, Omni Flash for multimodal editing on clips that fit inside 10 seconds.

On pure image quality, Omni's visual texture and lighting are a generational step up from Veo 3.1 while staying in the same visual family, and time code accuracy when prompting specific moments is sharper in Omni — so the trade you make by choosing Veo 3.1 for extension is texture, not coherence. Output economics on the Omni side: 720p default, 1080p upscale at no cost, and 4K at the credit cost of a full generation.
