Instagram recently announced that it is looking to lean heavily into entertainment and videos, and it is no longer only a photo sharing app. In fact, Instagram is now a robust platform where you can post videos in 3 different formats - on your feed, stories, and IGTV. Each of these video formats have their own requirements and best practices.
Hence, we’ve put together this post where we’ll show you:
Not just that, we will share a hack that will allow you to create high quality video content for Instagram in minutes!
Let’s dive right in!
If you want to share a video that you’ve already recorded to Instagram, first you need to:
- Open Instagram on your iPhone or Android
- Tap on the + icon at the bottom of your feed
On the following screen, you can choose the video you want to upload from your Gallery. If you want to narrow the media files down to video content, tap on the menu on top of the screen and choose Videos.
Instagram will crop your video to a square by default, but you can use the icon with arrows pointing in opposite directions to stretch the video back to its default size. You can also grab and resize the video to your liking.
Keep in mind that Instagram supports the aspect ratios between 1.91:1 and 4:5. If your video doesn’t fit the supported width and height, it will be cropped. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, you should learn more about how to resize a video for Instagram before uploading it.
If you want, you can use the options to:
- Loop your video using the Boomerang feature
- Upload multiple videos in a single post
When you’re done, tap on the blue arrow in the top-right corner of the screen.
Instagram Video Settings
Next, you can choose a filter, trim the footage, and pick a cover for your video.
Instagram provides a variety of eye-catching filters for images and videos. Pick the filter that suits your footage by tapping on it. You can preview what your video will look like on the screen above. If you want to change the filter’s strength, tap on the icon for it one more time and drag the slider.
When uploading a video to Instagram, you don’t need to use the entire footage. Instagram enables you to select a portion that you’re going to share by tapping the Trim tab at the bottom of the screen. Drag the white circles at the beginning and the end of the video to change its duration.
Instagram takes multiple screenshots of your video automatically and provides them as options for the cover. Tap each option to preview it and choose the one that represents your video the best.
If you don’t want to use the sound in your video, tap on the speaker icon at the top of the screen.
Instagram New Post Settings
On the following screen, you can insert an engaging video description. Aside from simple text, you should use popular hashtags to increase your video’s visibility. This way, people searching for a particular hashtag will be able to find your post. It can also appear in their suggestions feed based on the similar content they like.
Another option for making your video more visible and relevant is adding a location. If you’ve turned on location settings on your device, Instagram will provide several suggestions that you can pick from. To add a location manually, tap on Add Location.
If other Instagram users appear in your video, you can tag them by tapping on Tag People. When you do so, they can view the video on their profile by going to the Tagged Posts section.
If your social media accounts are connected, you can set up the video to be posted to:
When you tap on Advanced Settings, you can choose whether you want to disable the comments on your post. You can also check the Share Your Posts to Facebook option to ensure that your every Instagram video is posted to Facebook automatically.
Instagram In-Feed Video Requirements
Aside from the optimal Instagram video size, you should stick to the following requirements for the videos you post to your feed:
|Instagram In-Feed Video Requirements|
|Video Length||Under 60 seconds|
|Frame Rate||30fps or lower|
|File Size||No more than 4GB|
|Format||MP4 or MOV|
When rendering an MP4 video file for Instagram, the best option is to use:
- H.264 video codec
- AAC audio codec
- 3,500 kbps bitrate
If you don’t have a video prepared for upload, you can record one using Instagram. What you need to do is:
- Tap on the + icon at the bottom of the feed
- Choose the Video option to film a new clip
- Use the icon with circling arrows to pick the front or the back camera
- Hold the Record button to record your video
While you’re holding the Record button, you can view the length of your video above. The black bar underneath the recording screen can help you track how much you’ve got left to film until you reach the time limit for in-feed Instagram videos. When you’re done recording, you can choose to delete the video if you’re not satisfied. Tap the Delete button twice to do so.
If you like the video you’ve made, tap on the arrow in the top-right corner to continue. Configuring the rest of the options is the same as when uploading a video to Instagram.
Aside from posting videos in your Instagram feed, you can include them via the Story feature. To do so, you need to:
- Go to your Instagram feed
- Tap on your profile icon in the top-left section of the screen
If you’ve already posted Stories that are still running, you need to hold the profile icon and choose to Add to Your Story from the menu.
You have the option to:
- Record a video for your Story by holding the grey button
- Choose a media file to upload by tapping the button at the bottom-left corner of the screen
For the latter, you can import a video from your device. Change the option to Videos, and tap on the clip you want to use. While the maximum duration of a Story is 15 seconds, you can upload a longer video and let Instagram separate it into multiple Stories automatically.
Instagram Story Settings
Once you’ve uploaded or recorded a video for your Story, you can:
- Apply Instagram effects
- Turn off the sound
- Draw using various brush options
- Add textual elements
- Insert stickers
When you open the Stickers menu, you can add GIFs, emojis, and stickers. The menu also includes a variety of contextual boxes that you can use to make your Story more engaging, such as:
When you’re done setting up the story, tap on Send to. On the next screen, you can choose the audience for your story and send it via a private message to other Instagram users.
IGTV is Instagram’s solution for posting long-form videos. It’s a companion app that is linked to each user’s Instagram profile. You can post videos that are:
- 15 minutes long if uploaded from a mobile device
- 60 minutes long if uploaded using a web browser
Keep in mind that the videos you upload need to be in MP4 format and have a maximum size from 650MB to 3.6GB, depending on their duration.
First, you need to download IGTV from the App Store or Google Play and connect it to your Instagram account. Tap on Continue as [Account Name] to connect using the account you’re currently logged in to. If you’ve got multiple Instagram profiles, you can pick another by tapping on Switch Accounts.
When you’re ready to upload a video to IGTV, tap on the + button in the top-right corner of the screen.
IGTV Video Upload
You can choose to either film a new video or upload a recording from your device. Recording with IGTV is hands-free, which means that you need to:
- Tap the Record button
- Wait for the three-second countdown to end
- Shoot the video
If you want to upload a video, tap the icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen, as you can see in the image above. The duration of your videos can’t be under 60 seconds, so all the media files in your Gallery that are shorter than that will be faded out. You can select the Videos over the 60s option from the drop-down menu for IGTV to show you only the files that are supported by IGTV. To continue, tap on the video you want to upload.
IGTV Video Settings
You can preview the video you’ve selected and set up a cover by choosing from one of the automatically generated options. If you’ve created a better thumbnail for your video, use the Add from Gallery button to import it. When you’re done, tap on Next to continue setting up your IGTV post.
On the following screen, you can insert a title and description. Same as on Instagram, you should use relevant hashtags to make your video more visible. When you post more videos to the platform, you can create a playlist using the Add to Series button.
To attract your Instagram followers to your new IGTV video, you should post a preview to your feed and profile. No matter the resolution of your video, you should keep in mind that the preview will be cropped to a 4:5 aspect ratio. You can set up the way it shows to users via the Edit Preview option. If you’ve connected the app to Facebook, you can make your video visible to your followers there as well.
When you tap on Advanced Settings, you can set up IGTV to generate captions for your video automatically if it doesn’t have any.
Tap on Post in the top-right corner to upload your video to IGTV. Your followers can watch it using both apps. It will show as a suggestion on Instagram’s Explore Page as well.
