What is the difference between native 4K and upscaled 4K in AI video generation?

Native 4K means the model generates every frame at full 3840×2160 resolution during the generation pass itself. Upscaled 4K means the model generates at 720p or 1080p and an algorithm enlarges the frames afterward — it interpolates pixels rather than creating detail, which produces softness and edge artifacts native generation avoids.
Native 4K is detail the model actually generated: textures, edges, fine motion like hair or fabric are rendered at full 3840×2160 from the start. Few models generate 4K natively today. Google Omni is one of them, and Kling 3.0 markets native 4K aimed at production pipelines — community discussion around its release centered on exactly this distinction, "real 4K without upscaling hacks." Resolution alone isn't the finish line, though. In other words, native 4K of a mediocre texture still looks mediocre — just sharply.
Practically: use the free or cheap upscale tier when you're delivering to phones and social feeds, where 1080p upscaled to 4K is indistinguishable to most viewers. Pay for native 4K when the deliverable is theatrical, broadcast, or anything viewed on a large screen where interpolated detail falls apart.
