How do you prompt AI to generate realistic fabric movement in video?

Realistic fabric movement comes from describing the fabric's physical properties and per-shot behavior, not just naming the garment. Five methods that work:

  1. Write a texture language for every fabric

  2. Add a fabric movement direction note per shot

  3. Lock the three physical interactions that sell the fabric

  4. Upload full fabric reference angles

  5. State standing don'ts like "no plastic-looking fabric"

Write a texture language for every fabric. For each material in your film, describe in words how it physically feels — its texture, weight, temperature, reflectivity, and organic quality — before you prompt a single shot. Add a fabric movement direction note per shot. In your shot list, write one line per shot describing how the fabric moves and what it interacts with — wind lifting a hem on a walk, drape settling as the model sits, the fabric's response to touch. Lock the three physical interactions that communicate feel. Before generating, identify the three interactions that most tell a viewer what the fabric feels like — and build the shoot around them. A garment-fall shot (the fabric dropping or settling on its own) is one of the highest-value additions, because it communicates weight and hand-feel more than any on-body shot.

Upload full fabric references. Give the model a close-up of the weave, a front shot, a side shot, a back shot, and the fabric worn on a person. Motion realism depends on the model understanding the material at both texture level and drape level, and variety of reference angles is what supplies that.

State standing don'ts. Add explicit exclusions to your brief — "no plastic-looking fabric," "no generic AI faces" — so the most common failure modes are ruled out at the prompt level rather than caught in review.

Then iterate against a fixed checklist. Evaluate every generated clip on three parameters — weave accuracy, color accuracy, and how the garment interacts with the body and environment — lock the clips that pass, and regenerate only the ones that fail.
