How has AI changed independent filmmaking in the last few years?

AI has removed the budget and technical ceiling from independent filmmaking: creators now shoot small practical setups and generate the surrounding world — wide environments, oceans, exteriors — conversationally, without VFX crews or expensive equipment. One documented production built convincing open-ocean night shots around a 6x6 ft studio pool, something previously impossible at indie budgets.

The biggest change is that execution capability now roughly matches imagination. One independent filmmaker who had studied the craft for almost 10 years described a persistent gap between what he wanted to achieve visually and what his budget and technical resources allowed — AI generation closed it. You no longer need expensive equipment, location access, or a VFX pipeline to put a scripted image on screen.

Production has become hybrid: small practical sets, AI-built worlds. Independent filmmakers still build physical sets — AI extends them rather than replaces them. In that documented production, the team constructed an 8x8 ft practical cave wall and used AI to add effects on top of it, and shot an emergence-from-water scene in a 6x6 ft studio pool (the actor could tread water for only one to two minutes per take), then generated the wide red-ocean and shoreline shots around that anchor footage. Shooting the confined practical shot and asking AI to build the larger world outward from it is a workflow that simply did not exist for indie budgets a few years ago.

Generation replaced single-shot VFX commissioning with conversation. Working with AI video is iterative dialogue — you generate, give feedback on what you like and don't like, and refine until the shot matches your intent. What hasn't changed is the craft layer. Story logic still drives shot selection — you choose AI shots for narrative continuity, not visual spectacle. And AI has clear limits you direct around: keep it on wide environment shots, because close-ups of a character acting are where the footage looks fake. AI video has only been around for a couple of years, so treat it as a collaborator you actively train with feedback, not an automated replacement for filmmaking judgment.
